Review: 'GRAHAMS, THE'

Our Rating:
Husband and wife, Doug and Alyssa Graham say that their goal is "to draw on the deep recurring sources of American folk culture, giving them new shape".

On Glory Bound they focus on the influence of train travel on American roots music, a topic they have also explored in a documentary film called Rattle The Hocks.

The problem is that they don't really present any new shapes since all these tunes follow conventional twangy arrangements and chart the lives of all too familiar subjects like drifters, rebels, compulsive gamblers and hardened drinkers.

Nothing feels impassioned or personal so they seem content to go through the motions rather than breaking any fresh ground.

In train travel terms this is more like taking a much used commuter line rather than venturing down an uncharted route.
