Review: 'Venkman'
'Kakorrhaphiophobia'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '27 November 2015'

Our Rating:
Venkman, I’m informed, create off-kilter funk and hail from Lichfield, UK. They cite influences ranging from Michael Jackson, Kate Bush, Prince and Thomas Dolby. Two of the four I don’t mind, but melding them together makes for a fucking horrible mess.

‘Kakorrhaphiophobia’, as it happens, is an extremely rare condition – supposedly – defined as ‘the abnormal fear of failure or defeat.’ Now, I can’t see why this is rare or abnormal, and perhaps Venkman (I’m guessing they’re named after Bill Murray’s character in ‘Ghostbusters’) should fear failure a little more.

‘Kakorrhaphiophobia’ is an EP containing four frenetic, flailing, math-funk mash-ups. While I should not doubt be marvelling at their musicianship, I’m feeling a headache coming on that’s got nothing to do with my third pint of beer, and everything to do with their over-egged jazz-infused urban funk. No doubt having scored 6 Music’s backing, they’ll be on Jools Holland in 2016, and I’ll have countless people asking me ‘do you like Venkman? What? I thought you were into music.’
