Review: 'Glitch Code'
'Gifted_Damaged'

-  Album: 'Gifted_Damaged' -  Label: 'Basilica Music'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '12th February 2016'

Our Rating:
Glitch Code, the musical vehicle of songwriter / producer / ‘sound designer’ Paul Kirkpatrick, and vocalist Rachel Harvey (and yes, that would be Rachel Hyde-Harvey of ‘Sofia’s Diary’, ‘Holby City’, ‘The Bill’ and ‘My Family’, amongst other things: the fact there’s no mention in the band bio is admirable – instead of trading on being a ‘name, this is about the music, and the album).

It’s a pop album, yes, but the songs combine elements of brooding electro with layers of textured guitar and are infused with a dark gothy edge. You could throw in comparisons to Garbage and Curve, and they’d be justified. However, there’s no single sonic mould from which the album’s 12 tracks are forged. Nevertheless, ‘Gifted_Damaged’ portrays an act with a distinctive sound, and one which isn’t simply defined by Harvey’s vocals.

Combining rock and electro, it’s moody alternative pop with a sense of grandeur. The arrangements show a real attention to detail, and the production, which hints at 80s production values while offering a full, layered sound more than does the material justice. And the material is strong, meticulously composed and performed.

The front end of the album is especially strong, with the epic feel of the songs defying their punchy radio-friendly running times. There are moments of tenderness – ‘Black Tears’ and the title track are exemplary – but these are tinged with a sense of drama. The soaring power-balladry of ‘The White Room,’ is emotive and resonates delicately, bringing depth and dimension to a strong and rounded album.
