Review: 'BLAUE BLUME'
'Syzygy'

-  Label: 'Brillante Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '29th January 2016'

Our Rating:
The name of this four-piece band from Copenhagen means 'blue flower' which highlights their romantic side through links with the symbolism of the 17th and 18th century German poetry movement.

On a more contemporary note, they also claim to draw upon literary and cinematic influences from Tennessee Williams and David Lynch.

However, the band's identity is mostly defined by the swooning, emotionally charged falsetto vocals of songwriter, Jonas Smith. The shimmering minimalism of the arrangements serves to enhance the sense of this singer's tremulous vulnerability.

The distinctly head in the clouds mood is encapsulated in the single Sky, which tells of the torment of a woman torn between the rhapsody of love and a morbid fear of descending into a void.

The seven and half minutes Epoch is dominated by a My Bloody Valentine style wall of drone and contrasts with more sprightly tunes such as Buoyant Forces or Roxy.

As titles like Tranquil Curtains and Gently Lovely Baby suggest, it all gets a bit cloying at times but fortunately these Danes manage to stay grounded enough to convince us that they might be qualified to come to our emotional rescue.
