Review: 'BRONX, THE'
'THEY WILL KILL US ALL (WITHOUT MERCY)'

-  Label: 'White Drugs / Wichita'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '12/04/04'

Our Rating:
Punk music. Such a loaded phrase. In recent times the tag has been attached to so much crap that it has lost it’s impact. Now it seems all that is needed is spiky hair, a sneer and bad tattoos and voila you’re a punk band. Then occasionally a record comes along that reminds us what it was all about in the first place. The new single by The Bronx is just such a record.

‘They Will Kill Us All (Without Mercy)’ is like being hit in the face with a house brick repeatedly. The drums jump up and down on your skull only relenting to let the guitars slice your face open. Singer Joby Ford has obviously been gargling with glass. ‘Why should I give a shit?’ he spits before telling us ‘we re-wrote the standards’.

Matching this brutality with hooks galore is what sets this record above the pretenders. The guitars are ‘none more punk’ as if Steve Jones had given up cocking around in Los Angeles and decided to prove he still had some balls. The chorus is a massively addictive shout a long that will lodge in what remains of your head.

If that wasn’t enough, the 7” has a live version of ’I Got Chills’ on the b side. No great shakes in itself, being nothing more than a shabbily recorded barrage of noise. The real highlight though occurs about half way through when you can hear the soundman get involved in a fight, fall on his arse, laugh to himself, get up and carry on fighting! Now that must have been some gig.
