Review: 'JIMMY CAKE, THE'
'Tough Love'

-  Label: 'Penske Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '14th July 2017'-  Catalogue No: 'PENSKEFILE6'

Our Rating:
The Jimmy Cake's 6th studio album was written in 2015 as a continuous piece for performance at The Joinery arts space in their home town of Dublin City.

It is divided for vinyl convenience into two sides lasting 20:38 minutes and 21:55 minutes respectively and entitled simply Tough Love Part 1 and Tough Love Part 2.

This experimental band began as a 10 piece although only six names are credited for this release.

They specialise in slow building kosmiche psychedelia and define themselves as "loud instrumental space-prog-post apocalyptic rock" which pretty well covers all the bases.

The tribal drum beat gives this an energy beyond reassuring ambience for part 1, while the menacing repetition of guitar chords turns Part 2 into more of a death march.

The sounds tie into the fact that their main influence is defined as "the coming zombie apocalypse" but happily they're more alive than dead.
