Review: 'STAR FROM IVY'
'STAR FROM IVY (promo EP)'

-  Label: 'www.starfromivy.co.uk'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'JULY 2004'

Our Rating:
STAR FROM IVY have a collective confidence far outweighing their age and experience, but for once this is not a bad point. The beautiful production of their promo cd highlights a shining musical talent which manages to combine arrogance with a raw honesty and intensity.

The tracks on the EP are all special in unique ways, and are all capable of striking a chord within the psyche. From the opening bars of the ambitiously anthemic "Grounded", to the Summer festival-friendly "The Forever Sun", the listener is taken on a rocking journey. Singer Chris’s voice is confidently faultless with echoes of the Goo Goo Dolls, although with a distinctive British twist!

The guitars swerve from a dark intense wall of sound, to beautifully melodic and haunting riffs within the space of one song. Both lyrically and musically Star From Ivy possess professionalism and maturity, and I get the feeling that they have ambitions reaching much further than the struggles of the beer and sweat-drenched small gig circuit. Basically, they’re good and they know it!

It’s difficult to place Star From Ivy within the dominant musical genres of the moment. Both vocals and guitars have a rawness which is far-removed from the self-conscious art school Brit pack headed up by Franz Ferdinand et al. This in itself seems to be the basis of the Star From Ivy philosophy. They follow their hearts and instincts, playing to their own uncompromising tune, and this is what ultimately shines through.
