Review: 'MOBY & PUBLIC ENEMY'
'MKLVFKWR (Make Love Fuck War)'

-  Label: 'MUTE'
-  Genre: 'Hip-Hop' -  Release Date: '26th July 2004'-  Catalogue No: 'CDMUTE 333'

Our Rating:
Although written ostensibly for the forthcoming "Unity, The Official Athens 2004 Olympic Games" compilation, this writer personally feels it's rather more than co-incidence that a track brimming over with such righteous anger should be released as the current US election campaign rolls on relentlessly towards November.

Still, there's no denying "MKLVFKWR"s potency, and as summit meetings between the world's most influential dance/ hip-hop meisters goes, the upshot's pretty damn incendiary. It sputters into life with brain-scouring backwards masking and breaks into punchy, crusading psych-hop, with strident, fractured guitars and beetle-crushing beats. Curiously, it harks back to the rawk overload of Moby's "Animal Rights", though with some of the urban grooviness of "Bodyrock" from "Play" lobbed in like the Belfast sink for good measure.   Certainly, Chuck D's in his element and as reanimated as hell as he urges "power to the people 'cos the people want peace." Whoa! Stick that in yer corn cob and smoke it, Dubya.

Inevtiably, we get the mandatory 'instrumental' and 'acapella' versions of the track, which is a bit lazy considering the usually caring nature of the participants, but maybe we shouldn't be too greedy. "MKLVFKWR" rocks and makes its' point in big, neon letters. Whether Moby is naive to say: "we do still ostensibly live in a democracy, so my hope is that at some point people will vocally rise up and let the current leaders know that they've had enough" remains to be seen come November, but all credit to himself and PE for trying and making a big, bombastic noise en route.
