Our Rating:
The Anchoress – aka Catherine Anne Davies – has been going from strength to strength, and the buzz surrounding her second album, ‘The Art of Losing’ graced by James Dean Bradfield (Manics) as well as legendary drummer Sterling Campbell (David Bowie, Duran Duran) has taken her to a new level (and scored her a slot as the support for the upcoming Manic tour).
The same is true of longstanding W&H faves worriedaboutsatan, who first garnered coverage here in 2007. That’s not a brag, so much as an indication that their potential has been apparent for a long time, and so the inclusion of their music on Adam Curtis’ documentaries and having Ian Rankin waxing lyrical about their brand of expansive post-rock/ambient crossover isn’t really a surprise. As such, a worriedaboutsatan remix of The Anchoress feels simply right, somehow. Better still, it sounds it.
Here, Gavin Miller very much renders Catherine’s song with a soft, delicate, rippling ambience that’s very much worriedaboutsatan, particularly with the subdued, almost subliminal beats pulsing under the radar. The vocals are reverbed and drifting in a murky, echo-soaked wash of sound, and it’s no criticism to say that this sounds like listening to Zola Jesus from the room next door. It’s haunting, ethereal, understated, magical, mystical, and imbued with an emotional pull that registers on a subliminal level – and it’s pretty special.
