Our Rating:
This vinyl reissue is released to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Heavenly Recordings.

Acclaimed Irish singer songwriter Fionn Regan began writing his third album whilst living on the island of Majorca and it was recorded to tape using analogue methods. Regan says any Spanish ambience is “spliced with walking in the woods in Ireland.” The lyricism of Howard Gott’s string arrangements help to ensure a lush atmosphere pervades the studies of people and places.

Regan has received high praise from Lucinda Williams who has gone as far as to describe him as "his generation's answer to Bob Dylan"; a high compliment but also a potential millstone. Williams also steeped high praise on Ryan Adams and that didn’t end particularly well!

There are certainly plenty of reminders of His Bobness if you listen for them. For example, both List of Distractions and North Star Lover bring to mind North Country Girl. On the latter, where Regan is backed by The Staves, he sings “I hear that you’re living in that house out by the lake” and romantic reflections like this are a feature of many of the tracks.

In For a Nightingale, Regan declares “I love you and I always will” and the rich vein of lovestruck wistfulness is also evident in Dogwood Blossom a song which has featured in hit TV shows' ‘This Is England '88’ and ‘Normal People’.

There’s no doubting that Regan’s star is in the ascendent and the Irishman’s talents are amply demonstrated on this exceptional record.
