Review: 'LACHLAN BRYAN & THE WILDES'
'As Long As It’s Not Us'

-  Label: 'Social Family Records'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '17th September 2021'-  Catalogue No: 'SFR0124'

Our Rating:
Formerly known just as The Wildes, this Australian band are generally classified as Alt.Country but their sound on this album has more in common with mainstream soft rock. Their record label bio highlights the difficulty of classifying which genre they fall into by describing them as ”A little bit country, a little bit folky and a tiny bit rock n roll.”

The songs are light, melodic and moderately catchy but sadly they are also fairly bland.

Quit While We’re Ahead has shades of 80s period Leonard Cohen minus the poetry or pathos. I Went Down adopts blues motifs of murky dealings by a river but it is so polished that it doesn’t convey any subversive energy that such tunes need.

None of the eleven easy listening tunes are bad but, equally, there’s no real spark or fire to make any of them memorable.
