Our Rating:
Don’t judge an album by its cover or, for that matter, its title. Both on this release are crass and off-putting. The fact that this female artist has what is usually a man’s name is also distracting. All this is a shame because the record itself is actually pretty damn fine.

It is the third work of Cherokee and Oklahoma teenager and songstress who has made a name for herself as something of a musical prodigy. The ten new numbers showcased here were written between the ages of 14 and 18.

She’s already talking in terms of her song-writing reaching a transition stage; moving away from detached metaphors and trying to be more direct and honest. In one song she grapples with what Truth means when it comes to finding and evaluating a partner.

The power, purity and disarming maturity of her young voice is immediately engaging.

There are no weak tracks but Flannel Cowboy and the title tune stand out by managing to convey a sophisticated mix of vulnerability and strength. These highlight her ability to write classic love songs without resorting to tired platitudes or conventional imagery.

The album was recorded in Little Rock, Arkansas by bassist Jason Weinheimer along with her father Skippy and electric guitarist Kyle Reid. Reid’s guitar work is a delight, especially on Rain, but never draws attention away from the voice.

At such a young age, Ken Pomeroy has won awards as a rising star. After this album, I would correct this to assert that she has already achieved star status.
