'Mr M'

Our Rating:
This three-track CD single also contains a video, a photo gallery and a storyboard. Pretty good they are too.

Radio-play seeking "Mr M" is the big indie-pop single-style production number that hit me between the eyes at Leeds Metropolitan University earlier this year. With the extra density of studio compression and attack it sounds even bigger and better on CD. The extended go-mad bit at the end becomes a fearsomely loud nod in the direction of the climax to "Day in the Life" (sans never-ending chord). It's a piano tune about obsession and the weirdness of the normal, and the video is prettty spooky too. Mr M is a ravishing mainstream song with a big tune, treated with knowing strength and purity by vocalist Simon Wainwright. And some stinging bottleneck guitar as a special treat.

Supporting tunes "Drink" and "The Boy With The Mended Heart" stay in the same dramatic landscapes of emotion and release. They are clearly not filler tracks. A willing public have gone there with Muse, Travis, Coldplay, Embrace, Keane, Elbow and others. The Hombres plough it a mite deeper with the production giving the whole band a good crack at the tunes and making the end result a heap more crunchy than the lighter tilth of the current market leaders.

FOUR DAY HOMBRE have been building this stuff over something like five years. Despite West Yorkshire's universal assumption that they were the obvious band to go major label, less developed artists have been hoovered up one by skinny one. Perhaps they just look too well adjusted. As far as I know they don't do anything intravenous, they seem to work very hard and they probably have quite good day jobs. So when a self produced single, video and artwork ends up as good as this, what’s left for a big record label to do? A band this sussed-out might just take them over.

But no sweat, just go to their super-good website and buy the single. http://www.fourdayhombre.co.uk
