Our Rating:
Grey DeLisle is a singer-songwriter and autoharp player who was born and raised in San Diego. She has been compared to Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette by some generous souls but in truth is not really a patch on either.

When not making music, she has performed as a stand-up comic and is the most prolific voice actress in American animation history, having supplied over 2000 cartoon voices since 1996, including The Flintstones, The Simpsons to Scooby Doo.

In 2023, DeLisle plans release her first solo album of new songs in over fifteen years. The long hiatus started after becoming a mom; as she says: “I’ve spent the last 15 years making people so I took a break from making music”.

By way of an interim release, ‘Borrowed’ featuring ten covers album with only Borrowed and Blue being an original composition.

It is produced by Marvin Etzioni, a founding member of Lone Justice and it’s surely no coincidence that a Lone Justice song You Are the Light is one of the tunes chosen.
The rest are a selection of favourites which DeLisle sang with her brother to while away the long nights during the pandemic.

The mix is delightfully eclectic so we get a James Bond theme (You Only Live Twice), an old gospel song (Calvary) and even a countrified version of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall minus the kid’s chorus. The latter is a noble failure in my view but you have to admire her guts in making the attempt.

More successful are her takes of T. Rex’s Girl and the Old 97’sValentine. These suit the mood of melancholic reflection that her voice is best equipped for. Another highlight is Tonight You Belong To Me, originally a 1950s novelty hit by sister duo Patience & Prudence.

The arrangements are rich and varied highlighting the talents of backing musicians like Murry Hammond on guitar, Greg Leisz on pedal steel, Tammy Rogers on fiddle and Etzioni on mandolin and bass.

This may be a kind of stopgap release but there is plenty to admire and the album plays out in some style with a beautifully delicate and haunting version of Stephen Foster’s Willie We Have Missed You.
