Review: 'Bayonets, The'
'Argentina'

-  Label: 'Wicked Cool Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '10th February 2020'

Our Rating:

Their press release makes much of the fact that ‘rock royalty’ have converged on this single release, before going on to detail how ‘the group, consisting of core members Brian Ray (Paul McCartney, Etta James), Oliver Leiber (son of famed songwriter Jerry Leiber) and Lucrecia López Sanz, is often rounded out by a revolving roster of musicians, including but not limited to Adam MacDougall from The Black Crowes on keys, Davey Faragher from Elvis Costello’s band, and Scott Shriner from Weezer.’

The trouble with so many rock luminaries is that they’re past their creative peak and their relevance is increasingly questionable. Of course, some bands have achieved immortality – Led Zep, The Doors, and – much as it pains me to say, Queen – but the majority of those who are considered ‘rock royalty’ are simply past it now, revered by parents and probably more often than not, grandparents. Those in their teens and twenties simple aren’t going to be enthused by these white-haired lizards.

I’m by no means suggesting age should be a reason to lob an artist on the bonfire – but some musicians age better than others when it comes to new material in later life.

This single release is a case in point. ‘Argentina’ is so very middling, so much the sound of old buggers playing blues-based rock. It’s well-executed – of course it is – but it sounds so dated. Flipside ‘Post Apacalypso’ is a slow smoocher, but again, it just sounds like old sods trying to be a bit cool, a bit low sling and swinging – and while the songs ok, if not my bag, it’s just below middling on account of atmosphere.
