Review: 'Broken Creels, The'
'Friend or Foe'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '7th April 2023'

Our Rating:
While The Broken Creels are newcomers to these pages, and likely an unfamiliar name to most, the band’s vocalist / guitarist, Colin Clyne, has been featured a fair few times, and as far back as 2013. Now the award-winning singer-songwriter is at the helm of an ensemble comprised of various Aberdeenshire luminaries, with Daz Alexander (The Dawntreaders) on drums, Lee Heinemann (Eskimo Blonde) on bass, and Tom Ward (Parker, The Carrons) on guitar / keys.

The band describe themselves as a “collaborative catch pulled from the depths of the North Sea,” the band is brimming with influences such as Humble Pie, Bob Dylan, The Stone Roses, and John Fogarty

‘Friend or Foe’ piles in with a rush of guitar and it’s uptempo and exhilarating – I’m reminded perhaps somewhat tangentially of ‘Australia’ by The Manic Street Preachers and The Sterophonics’ ‘Dakota’, and while the lyrics are searching, questioning one’s sense of place and belonging and life in this difficult world, the overall vibe is positive, uplifting. ‘Friend or Foe’ has very much a breezy 90s indie feel to it, there’s just a bit of jangle to the strum, while the drumming is meaty and propulsive, driving it along for its duration. Solid and hooky, it immediately feels like an old friend – and certainly not a foe.
