This Remix single is the latest release by Catford based Synth whizz Rodney Cromwell AKA Adam Cresswell formerly of Arthur & Martha and Saloon, Rodney has been making super cool analogue synth music for a few years and this EP features remixes of one of the songs from last year's Memory Box album.
The ep opens with The Winter Palace (Gemma Cullingford's No Escape Mix) That moves the action slightly from The Winter Palace in St Petersburg, into the casemates at the Peter & Paul Fortress as there really is no way out, of the gauzy hazy synths pulsing as they encourage you to admit defeat and surrender to the guards at Butyrka, the doom dread you feel at the possible water torture to come keeps this fraught.
The Winter Palace (Infra Violet Remix) is more upbeat like they are in one of the dining rooms in The Winter Palace eyeing up Catherine's The Greats Dinner services and wondering if they served cabbage soup in those gold leave encrusted soup dishes or if they can smuggle the set out of the Hermitage, this feels like they know there is no hope, but they really do believe things will get better, the regime will change, peace will come, just keep dancing to this all night long.
The Winter Palace (Radio Edit) sounds designed to come on after the news to salve our consciences or shame that Vlad is still in power, as we concentrate on improving things and making sure everyone has free access to The Winter Palace, this has a bit of an 80's sheen to the production.
The ep ends with Rod, Jane And Freddy a tune for the Rainbow Icons, much missed and much maligned by all sorts of comedians, they helped teach a generation of kids all sorts of cool stuff, this is a gently evocative synth piece with the odd Jane sample thrown in.
