Review: 'PICKLE DARLING'
'Laundromat'

-  Label: 'Father/Daughter Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '16th June 2023'

Our Rating:
Christchurch, New Zealand-based gender fluid artist Lukas Mayo took inspiration from minimalist short story writer Lydia Davis. With the idea of saying more with less, nine out of the twelve tracks last for little more than 90 seconds.

The aim is to find magic in the mundane. “I was thinking a lot about music and art in the same way as doing your chores,” Mayo says. On Kinds Of Love and More Kinds Of Love, the vocals consist of voicemails to close friends.

Mayo as Pickle Darling cites Connie Converse, Bill Fay, and Vashti Bunyan as inspirations and I also detect the influence of Sufjan Stevens.

Laundromat was created at home following a daily song writing practice without sweating the small stuff. It effectively captures life’s fleeting moments and thoughts through delicate pop tunes. Like fireflies, they glimmer brightly and then are gone.
