Review: 'WEEJUNS MOLLESTAD, HEDVIG'
'Weejuns'

-  Label: 'Rune Grammofon'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '8th September 2023'

Our Rating:
Go or stay at your peril. You decide.

Go at your peril is the meandering 12 minute opening tune.

The rambling thirteen minute Stay at your peril is the penultimate track.

If you choose to leave, you’ll miss (according to the PR) “shimmering, hardcore improvisation and breath-taking instrumental interplay.”

‘Weejuns’ is the work Norwegian guitarist, vocalist and composer Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen who teams up with keyboard player Ståle Storløkken (on Hammond organ, synth and Continuum) and young drummer Ole Mofjell .

The trio undemocratically carries just her name although for some reason she uses Weejuns, the album title, instead of her actual surname.

These six instrumental tracks were recorded live in concert during 2022 at venues in Oslo and Stavanger with four of the six tracks taken from the threesome’s very first concert – at the new Munch Museum. You can’t get much fresher than that.

It is the sound of three artists in search of a groove who spend rather too much time noodling self-indulgently. It’s a relief when Hug that tree! bursts into life around the ten minute mark allowing the luxury of seven minutes of controlled prog-orientated freak out.

Most of the rest is like Tarkovsky-esque mood music for a slow-moving horror movie.
