Review: 'Bonnet, Francois J. & Stephen O'Malley'
'Cylene II'

-  Label: 'Drag City Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '10.11.23.'

Our Rating:
Cylene II is part of Francois J. Bonnet and Stephen O'Malleys ongoing artistic collaboration, that has seen them working together in a number of different contexts since 2018. This album was recorded partially live, part studio session, part Art installation in Italy, Switzerland and France. The press release suggests this music be used at seances.

The album opens with Four Rays (Anti Divide) an ambient soundscape, with long tones, deep whale sounds, with what might be singing bowls.

Rainbows has a gentle beginning like a light drizzle is permeating the air, twinkling sounds like rays of sunshine break through, as they lay back and look up at the rainbow that has appeared, as the deep bass thrum reverberates around the room. Wind like chimes shift among the long tonal shifts.

Vulcani Di Fango takes the sounds Wharton Tiers played about with, adding in some Classical textures, as this becomes Industrial ambient soundscape as the guitars mutate the sound kaleidoscopically.

Ghosts Of Precognition has tonal textural dark ambient calls in the dark, screeds of sound jump out the walls to frighten more fragile listeners. Bass intonations massage your feet as distaining guitar notes crack open your mind.

Troisieme Noire has the dark bowel shattering guitars, that threaten to go all Dark Entries on us, I wish they did, but instead distortion on top of distortion, scraped tectonic tones of dread infuse every pore of your body, as the noise suppurates your very core.

The album closes with La Ronde that opens like wind chimes in an arctic setting slowly howling across the wastelands as they recall Low Bias evoking sparse winter wildernesses.
