Review: 'Anti-Nowhere League, Menace, Chinese Burn'
'Live at The 100 Club London Resolution Festival'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '12.1.24.'

Our Rating:
This was our third and final visit to this year's Resolution Festival at the 100 Club for another top notch three band bill.

Chinese Burn had already started by the time we arrived and Long Live The Underdog welcomed us into this Stroud and proud bands world of angry Otway style punk. The next song about the Daily Mail was as bile ridden as it needed to be as Ben Rigby really gave it to that trash talking rag.

They then gave us all a history lesson with Selsey Common 21st May about the day in 1839 when 5000 chartists gathered on Selsey Common, in Stroud, to make common cause with the Tolpuddle Martyrs fighting to make England a safer and fairer place to live and work. Shut Your Mouth was succinct and had some very Otway style manic maneuvers from Ben.

Danger Island Penguins had sideways enough lyrics to be in in the vein of Jilted John. I Wonder asked some good questions before they got the whole of the 100 club singing along to the proto punk classic SOS, by everyone's crustcore faves ABBA, they then closed with the quite brilliant Defending Stalingrad that asked some pertinent questions, about how you might find common cause with one enemy, to help defeat a bigger enemy, this was a great fun opening set.

Next on were Menace who played a greatest hits set, for the new material will be revealed at the Hope & Anchor next month. They opened with Screwed Up that Noel pretty much spat at us. Monkey let us all know what they were trying to shake off. Noel made sure we knew how pertinent sadly Insane Society still is in 2024.

Noel added his guitar to Pete Bradshaw's as they ripped through the classic One Two One Two before Dave Jenkins moved to the main mic for spirited run through I need Nothing, as he pulverized his bass while singing. Noel got as angry as he could for Leave Me Alone.

Noel took a good look at how we were all togged out before they did Man At C & A as we all sang along, while hoping to visit a branch in Europe sometime soon. They haven't been Last Year's Youth for a few years now, but this anthem still sounds vital. Noel asked is we felt Civilized well more than in some parts of the world surely.

They made sure everyone sang along to So Fuck You as they made sure we knew how sad they were at the current state of things as Noel invited anyone who wanted to join them onstage, of course they closed with the monumental G.L.C. complete with the onstage rabble singing along with them.

Then it was time for the current line-up of the Anti-Nowhere League to up the ante as Animal insisted, We All Get Fucking Pissed I think everyone agreed it was a good idea! At The End Of The Day had bone crushing drums from Jamie Oliver. We all knew that Animal meant every word of I Hate People no matter how big a smirk he had on his face.

Animal then made clear that we should all break the law with them, with there own menacing Hells Angel stalking the stage we had to join in right. Branded left us in no doubt we should all have ANWL tattooed on us no matter what.

They gave us the hits with a monster version of So What that was followed by the bands monumental cover of Streets Of London that was there first single, if only after all this time we had no homeless people on the streets, sadly this song is still accurate.

Was this show As Good As It Gets well blasted out like this it may well be, at least the next song was For You as the guitars crushed us, as it wasn't quite cold enough to build a Snowman but that's not the kind of Snowman Animal likes anyway.

Animal got to go all sensitive on Woman. Before he got Jamie Oliver to pay tribute to the man that sacked him on I Wanna Be Like Charlie Harper, don't we all, as Dear old Charlie approaches his 80th birthday.

We Will Not Remember you was for all the politicians before they claimed New Age Is Here. God Bless Alcohol had a huge sing along as well as being one of the speediest tunes of the set. That led into Fucked Up & Wasted which is how Animal wants to spend every day.

Judging by the state of my notes I was indeed Fucked Up & Wasted no idea what the next song was.

They closed as ever with a brilliant run through We Are The League that allowed everyone one more chance to yell along with The League at the end of another great show at the Resolution Festival.
