Review: 'Lovely Eggs, The'
'My Mood Wave'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '9th February 2024'

Our Rating:
Has it really been four years since the last new music from The Lovely Eggs? Apparently so. But the super-hard-gigging and all-round good-eggs have seen their profile leap on the back of their taking on the big venues with their surcharge on merchandise sales. Their refusal to submit has been a classic David v. Goliath scenario, and they’ve not only emerged victorious, but with universal respect. Because why should bands – and fans – have the proceeds of the one thing that keeps them afloat gouged to fuck by big venues selling out big-name bands and charging £7 for a pint of the pissiest lager or cider? Often, when it comes to those smaller acts who exist on the breadline, the sale of a handful of T-shirts makes the difference between affording fuel to get to the next gig or not. They’ve also been busy campaigning to save Lancaster Music Co-Op, a local community rehearsal rooms and recording studio).

This is reason alone to love The Lovely Eggs, and the fact they duetted with Iggy Pop is one more. But the main reason to love The Lovely Eggs is that they’re a cracking band.

‘My Mood Wave’ is the first fruits of their sessions with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann, which yielded their forthcoming album, which is out in May, and will be accompanied – of course – by a tour. And it’s a top tune, for sure. It’s a magnificent slice of psyche-hued pop with swirling, fuzzed-out guitars and drumming that straddles disco and glam as it thumps along and Holly intimates with gloriously straight eloquence ‘I don’t want all this shit on my plate’.

Shimmering and poppy but punky and still resolutely vintage/lo-fi/DIY despite the name producer, ‘My Mood Wave’ is melodic, motorik, and magnificent.
