Review: 'Static Lives'
'Rush'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '28th March 2024'

Our Rating:
‘Who TF are Static Lives?’ asks the email, somewhat provocatively, although it’s a fair question. And how has a band who only formed in January and have yet to release their debut single or play a single show sold out half of the seven dates they’ve got booked in the spring, as well as landing no fewer than four festival dates in May and July? Well, while Static Lives may be a new band, their members are anything but new to making music, or to the scene. In fact, the Sheffield act could be considered something of a regional supergroup, being a power trio consisting of Lori (Weekend Recovery) Rob (SICK) and Andy (Mollyanna).

The three bands no doubt share a substantial crossover in their fanbases, and on the strength of this debut release, they won’t be disappointed. It’s a punchy two-and-a-half minute guitar-driven, hook-laden poppy punky blast. The thick, strolling bassline and insistent drumming both propel it along with a palpable sense of urgency, in keeping with the song’s title, and while the lyrics might not be the most upbeat (‘The bones in my bed / My heart’s good as dead / the beat in my head’ Lori sings in the mid-section), but the delivery is brimming with energy.

They’ve set the bar high, and if ‘Rush’ is representative, then there’s a lot to get excited about.
