Our Rating:
Veiled Screen, Woven Dreams is the second album by New Orleans based operatic goth duo The Palace Of Tears who are LV Darkling and Eric R Scheid, with special guest cellist Unwoman. This mournful atmospheric album is imbued with the pain and sorrow LV Darkling has felt over the loss of her brother Kirk. The album was recorded at Chateau Of The Crying Myst in New Orleans, produced by the band and mastered by Robert Rich.

The album fades in atmospherically with Black Obsidian Beyond Oblivion as slow ambient tones are interrupted by bass drum, deep bass notes, synth's glacially opening up dark realms in need of exploration. LV Darklings slow carefully enunciated vocals float operatically over the gloomy synth washes, peering over the edges of the abyss, timpani worlds shatter only darkness deep oblivion remain.

Strings slowly evoke An Echo In Time a place of mourning, sombre memories of better times, can you hear the past calling to you, can you move beyond tragedy.

The Embers Of Your Being Glow Still takes a funereal march to see glimpses of the departed spirit flying from the embers of the pyre, hoping to always carry there ghost with you, LV's vocals float as if in a high gothic cathedral looking down from the bell tower, the atmospherics clutch at the lilies still laid out below.

Cimitiere De L'Absinthe No 333 has pulsing sounds like the spooky feelings I had while walking round L'Cimitiere De L'Est this week in Lille, dark gothic tombs and headstones adorned with a variety of musical instruments, ghostly wails of pain for all the lost.

Lair Of The Undying has cello's haunting it, as deep realms of pain unfold within the synths, sparing percussive feelings allow you to hopefully find a way out of the utter despair of loss.

The title song Veiled Screen, Woven Dream is a slow stark cascade of memories, fleeting glimpses of how things were before the world fell apart. Searing moments into the fabric of pain filled life encompassed with loss, that falls away to nothing.

The album closes with The Serpent Bearer starkly beautifully intoned tale of the last grasps of the serpent removing life, seeing them depart to other realms within the gloom infused cellos and synths.
