Our Rating:
Whoa! Classic 'jump to incorrect conclusions' time.

Leeds-based outfit 10,000 THINGS are signed to Fiction and have released an album-trailing single called "Titanium". Right. They're signed to The Cure's label and have a single which suggests broody moodiness along the windswept lines of The Open. Ok, it's obvious what this is gonna be like.

And thus your reviewer flings it into his ever-devouring CD player....

"I think I need titanium boxer shorts, I just can't cope with all of these dirty thoughts!" runs the chorus. Eh? What the bloody hell? Who let this buncha lippy young "Carry On"-obsessed buggers out of their box?

Of course if you read their press blurb it all becomes clear. 10,000 Things may be based in Leeds (Goth's spiritual home, all things considered), but have recently been supporting renegade Libertine Pete Doherty's Babyshambles on tour and - with possible inclusion of The Kaiser Chiefs here too - are making like the Yorkshire branch of the London-centric urchin rock movement.

Indeed, led by charismatic loon Sam Riley, ver Things have produced a well-drilled version of the churning indie guitar moves so shambolically adopted by the guerilla gigging capitol-based kids, and it gives Sam the chance to quickly set out his gonzoid lyrical stall. He opens with "I'm really stupid, I'm usually too stoned" before hitting the chrous which adds a whole new dimension to lusty desire as the lure of the laydeez has Sam's trouser snake hissing uncontrollably.

10,000 Things have plenty more youthfully-addled anthems lined up for their debut album, and "Titanium" is typically daft. With an eye on the future, they've had the presence of mind to bring in heavyweight producer Phil Brown (Sly Stone and The Small Faces, no less), so their intrinsic devil-may-careness may actually mask something more sussed. So we'll see.   Still, "Titanium" (once your reviewer has got over the shock) is a rollicking ride. It won't change your life, but it will make glorious (non) sense to anyone under 21 desperate for the weekend to come.
