Our Rating:
Immersion is the project of post-punk minstrels and life partners Colin Newman (Wire) and Malka Spigel (Minimal Compact).

Drums come courtesy of Matt Shulz .

Newman and Spigel have been part of the band Githead since 1994 and collaborated with kindred spirits for Nanocluster compilation albums. They are also hosts of the online Swimming in Sound radio show. This album on their own record label is proof that they have kept their fingers on the pulse and not allowed themselves to become disillusioned by the state of the planet.

For the music videos they look like two time travellers beaming into the 21st Century on a mission to learn some lessons. The learning curve would be very steep if this were truly the case. The first question would probably be that of the album title. The second might be ‘What the fucking fuck??’ Two question marks (one each) in lieu of a exclamation mark.

The musical response consists of four instrumentals alternating with four vocal pieces.

Newman poses pertinent philosophical questions like “What’s the point of art if it doesn’t say anything?” (in Timeline).

The album begins, appropriately enough, with four minutes, forty-four seconds of Defiance. No words necessary.

On the lead track Use It Don't Lose It. The title could be used as a rallying cry. They sing/speak the affirmation “You can make a difference if you know how.”. The ‘how’ would give us all the keys to the kingdom (come).

In Push The Rock they are a little more specific: “Be awake / Be aware /Create.”   Redefining ‘wokeness’ as a cause and not a curse seems a good starting point.

Musically, the tuneful tuned-in sound blends electronica, ambient, krautrock and squelchy synth-pop. Easy listening for uneasy times. The radicalism is intrinsic.
