Seasons Change is the debut solo album by well-known Irish Musician Ger Eaton who has played in multiple bands over recent decades, he finally takes centre stage with this collection of the singles he has put out over the last few years. He recorded with Duncan Maitland, Sean Coleman, Kieran Eaton, Ronan Dooney, Graham Hopkins, Gavin Fox and Castle Quartet. String arrangements by Andrew Keeling it was recorded at various studios in Ireland.
The album opens with a short introduction featuring waves lapping on the shore, Tibetan singing bowls and chimes, along with a flute for a most beguiling salvo.
I Thought I'd A Friend is a slow almost baroque folk song, for one of those moments when you realize that someone you once trusted, has betrayed you in all the worst possible ways, this swells and builds, with a thoughtful backing choir and heartwarming strings, the music is stunningly beautiful and the opposite of the pain in the lyrics.
Home Again is lushly orchestrated chanson for the heartbroken, coming back to an empty home, abandoned by the one he used to love, the strings are his only comfort, the french counterpoint breathy whispers, add to the sense of loss.
Heaven Knows he may be miserable now, but has let the joy of the strings and woodwind lift the mood, couched in beauty, any barbs he throws your way may have more resonance, for just how gently he tosses them towards you.
Phoenix (Reborn) feels striped back to the essentials of an acoustic guitar, a bass drum, some trumpet and strings, the song blossoms and grows like the flames of that Phoenix, he is Reborn after all the traumatic events.
Hollow is how you feel as everything has become too much, your seeking solace somewhere that you won't feel like your drowning, in the middle of an MOR crooner revival, tears will not be enough for all the pain he feels.
The Time It Takes To Fall has magical trumpets leading into a slightly more hopeful look at how things might be going forwards, lush orchestration a must, widescreen Bacharach & David style chamber pop, he may sing about falling, but it sounds much more hopeful.
To The Ones whose footprints he follows in the snow, he wishes to find a way to make sure you know the love he has, among the strings and soft feelings embracing you.
The album closes with Season Changes that has an ambient interlude, from which a chanter like sound emerges, flutes flutter by, an orchestrated psychedelic pasture noting the passing of the seasons and the feelings that evolve over time. A wandering band of minstrels lead the way forwards towards the next season.
