Review: 'LITTLE BARRIE'
'London, King's Cross Water Rats, 26th January 2005'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
’Last call for an L Barrie to board the soul train, that’s L Barrie…Soul Train’. If the soul train went via Nottingham and Portsmouth, no doubt it would invite passengers three; Barrie Cadogan, Wayne Fullwood and Lewis Wharton, because we are talking the British equivalent of The Roots…well almost.

Drummer Wayne’s soul-laced wails and woo’s , precision sticksmanship and white boy afro should put him up there with Questlove whilst lil’ Barrie himself gives a masterclass in guitar, as bassist Lewis keeps the groove, inviting body shaking en masse.

It was somewhat of a mini revelation tonight, as Little Barrie strip it down and jam it out.   No effects, no mess, 'tis a simple ethos and one that serves them well, and though it may limit them in the future, a warm 50-minute blast of positive energy won't do anyone any harm. Forthcoming single ‘Free Salute’ gets the heads a bobbin and the bodies a poppin whilst ‘Long Hair’ sees the Stone Roses meet the Verve in a stop start swagger of shuffles and slides.

It might be more body shaking than ground breaking, and no, they haven’t come to steal your soul, they’re just here to make you move. Funkalicious? Funkadelic? You get the funkin' idea.
