Our Rating:
Following hot on the heels of the recent Roman Noseband release, the Beenie's Hoose label have come up with this cracking 3 track single from stablemates, THE KINGS OF CHEEZE.

Further enhancing the reputation of the label, based at the Sound Cafe studio just south of Edinburgh, and using the same personnel (well, almost) as the Roman Noseband project, minus the Beta Band member, The Kings Of Cheeze play a variation of jazz-influenced folk rock. At times it sounds like David Byrne fronting the B52's. Yes, I know, totally Mexico.

Lead track 'Don't Go' (for me, the weakest song here) is a playful little number, but unfortunately it sails to close to the irritating chorus of the Hothouse Flowers song of the same name, making it, well, irritating.

'Goosey' is much, much better. Packed full of echoed muted trumpets, sumptuous basslines and frenetic, subtle percussion, fans of the Noseband project will absolutely love this. But, it's the last track of the three that shows what the band are really capable of.

'Throw It Away' is a loping, energetic piece with restrained vocals, acoustic picking, a shuffling backbeat and a great sing-a-long chorus. It also happens to feature the best bagpipe solo this side of Killiecrankie. I kid you not.

As the cd is only available from their website, I doubt if this will get much exposure or airplay. Which is a shame really, because music this energetic and fun should be heard by as big an audience as possible. Well worth the effort of tracking down.

This is a band that deserves more recognition. They're innovative, funky, and know their chops. They revel in their influences (Captain Beefheart, David Byrne, Johnny Cash, Talking Heads, and lots more). Jazz/punk/ folk-rock band....yeah! Get the CD...urge them to make more...and catch them live if you can! It's finding gems like these that makes Whisperin & Hollerin such a great site.
