'PARTY'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'NEW RELEASE 8/7/02'

Our Rating:
As anyone who’s been splattered in the face by the testosterone-fuelled shagfest that is THE D4’S debut album, “6Twenty” will tell you, “Party” is a two and a half minute buzzbomb of hedonist attitude primed and ticking.

Housed by its’ classic, RAMONES-influenced sleeve shot of the band’s legs clad in regulation drainpipes and canvas shoes, this three-tracker also includes two new helpings of revved-up ramalama. Both clock in at around the 2 minute 30 mark and the first – “Outta Blues” – has that rumbling headrush thing that these New Zealanders are doing far more convincingly than virtually any other pretenders on the block at this moment in time.

The closing “North Shore Bitch” is the real treat, though. Actually a cover of a DEVIL DOGS tune, it’s so “Leave Home” it almost hurts. Hell, there’s even a Coney Island reference. However, it’s all so infectiously exciting you find yourself letting go regardless of the stupidity of the lyrics.
In an age when we’re so crushingly concerned with pushing musical boundaries forward, THE D4 will probably continue to suffer the sling and arrows of “Retro!” accusations. Yet, when you hear rock ‘n’ roll as joyous, turbocharged and unaffected, it’s refreshing to just get ripped on their blitzed out boogie.
A great night out, if ever this reviewer heard one. (8/10)
