Review: 'BULLYCATS, THE'
'DELTA RHYTHM (EP)'

-  Label: 'DEMO (Self-Released)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'DEC 2004'

Our Rating:
If ever a band sounded like they'd be great live, it's THE BULLYCATS. Unfortunately, for us anyway, their brand of Deep Southern swamp-rock doesn't translate well to the recorded format.

Not much info on these guys other than they hail from Winchester, and claim that “We're nearly a great band, but not quite.” Well, at least, if nothing else, they're honest.

'Delta Rhythm', the lead track here, is a pulsating, body-shaking rocker of a song packed full of great guitar riffs and funky bass runs. Or it would be if the production let you here them properly. Some of the guitar licks are so far down in the mix it makes you wonder why they even bothered to leave them in.

'Bottle Of Misery' does exactly what it says on the tin. A dull, plodding non-descript effort that does nothing for the band in terms showcasing their talents, while '7th Floor' and the final track, 'Praise The High Times' appear to be lacking that vital ingredient; Soul. I'm not doubting the band are capable of the required emotion, just that it seems to be sadly lacking here.

Music like this really needs to be heard live, in a packed sweaty hall, with a beer in your hand and a smile on your face to have any impact, but, I'm afraid, on this showing, it sounds like The Bullycats have been neutered.
