Review: 'BE YOUR OWN PET'
'DAMN DAMN LEASH'

-  Label: 'XL Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '14th March 2005'-  Catalogue No: 'XLS 212 CD'

Our Rating:
Be Your Own Pet are a young female fronted band from Nashville, Tennessee and their debut single is a prime slice of chaotic noisy punk. If you are tiring of all the anaemic garage bands that record companies are swamping us with now, Be Your Own Pet are the antidote.

‘Damn Damn Leash’ clocks in under two minutes, fly’s by the seat of it’s pants and is utterly thrilling. ‘You’ve got me on a leash / A damn damn leash / And it’s hard enough to be my damn self’ howls Jemina Pearl and you feel that the object of her anger had better watch himself. Musically the band flit between abrasive punk with a hint of grunge thrown in. Yes it could have easily been recorded in the early 90’s but as proved by 50ft Wave when music this visceral is executed well it easily stands up today.

The remaining two tracks ‘Spill’ and ‘Electric Shake’ are of equal quality and although the basic template is never strayed too far from the overall feeling is of a strong EP rather than single with b sides. More please.
