Our Rating:
THE STANDS' leader Howie Payne seems to have been the boy most likely to on the Scouse scene for so long it seems untrue, but with THE STANDS' new single "Do It Like You Like", it sounds like he's finally hitched himself up to some surefire success.

The first taster from soon-come second album "Horse Fabulous", "Do It Like You Like" was produced with some suss by Tom Rothrock (Elliott Smith, Beck) and John Paterno in LA, and the Californian sun sounds like it's done the Merseyside boys no harm at all, as it sees them returning with a spring in their step.

Indeed, "Do It Like You Like" is an assured, attention-grabbing return: a bouncy'n'lippy Stones-meets-La's affair with an undeniable, knuckleheaded groove and hooks catchier than a bouquet of barbed wire.   The neo-psych guitar solo's cool as well, adding a touch of Creation-style paisley freakbeat for good measure. The attention to detail ensures that - surely - this one can't fail for our patient hero.

We've been waiting so long for Howie to crack it, we'll probably hardly belive it when he does, but with "Do It Like You Like", he seems to have that elusive commercial future all sewn up. Good on him.
