-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '30th May 2005'

Our Rating:
There was a hotly-tipped London band called Lights kicking around at the turn of the Millennium. They even had some bunch of plonkers called Coldplay supporting them at the Camden Barfly if memory serves, actually.

So I assume that bunch AREN'T to be confused with THE LIGHTS, who are apparently the brainchild of songwriter Mat Lester, who has fashioned a slice of guiltily delectable funk-pop (yes, I did write that) with "Neighbours".

Yes, it's wallowing in '70s retro and musically this heinous three minutes provokes a flurry of references to the likes of Stevie Wonder, The Human League and even bloody KC And The Sunshine Band rather than the expected Bloc Party/ Franz comparisons we have at the ready this year, but somehow the sultry duet between co-vocalists Ryan Kane and Imogen Andrews (yes, it's about time we had an Imogen on the scene, says I) hooks you in from the start.

Actually, lyrically the spectre of prime time Jarvis Cocker (sample lyric: "I can smell your scent through a vent in the hall") also hangs over this critter, and by the time Ryan launches into that lascivious chorus of "Why don't you come calling, while we still got the feeling/ we could wake up the neighbours 'til they bang on the ceiling", all vestiges of protest have left you and you've thrown your lot in with them. So it's a result against all the odds, basically.

Having said that, the mullet-tastic Kylie and Jason cover is truly evil.
