Review: 'Mizzoni, John'
'Songs for the Human Listener'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '2005'

Our Rating:
This is an atypical folk record. Actually, it's an atypical album altogether. "Songs for the Human Listener" by John Mizzoni (http://cdbaby.com/cd/mizzoni4) seems to have crawled out of some college-radio tomb from the late '80s. Anybody who was tuned into the left of the dial during that time will feel a sense of deja vu with this LP, which is mainly acoustic-based, stripped down, and a bit offbeat in that charming indie-pop fashion.

Whether it's intentional or not - or if he even recognizes it - there's an uncanny resemblance between Mizzoni's voice and that of David J. from Love & Rockets. The spiky riffs of "The Anti-Song" recalls Love & Rockets' classic "No New Tale to Tell," not to mention Mizzoni's voice, which has the same '60s psychedelia vibe. "Fandago Mantra" is also Love & Rockets-ish although Mizzoni's music isn't meant for dancing, which that British band often made university kids do.

Another '80s campus favorite, the Woodentops, is reflected in the locomotive rush of "Don't Do That." Whether or not Mizzoni actually listened to these groups remains to be seen; it could be that they merely shared the same influences. And how exciting it is to compare a new musician to icons such as Love & Rockets and the Woodentops in 2005.

Mizzoni writes warm, positive tunes, free from modern angst and irony. The happy heart face on the cover is no deception. It's about time somebody released an LP that just wants to make you smile.

I give this CD an A+ for many reasons. One, John Mizzoni's music is almost like an addiction, it drives you in a positive way. Two, the lyrics are so inspiring, and really written about every day life, much of what I can, and many people can relate too spiritually, philosophily, or just about events in life in general. His hard work, and talent inspire me with songs that I can listen too, songs that I sing in my head often, with so much variation. "Don't Do That," is an awesome song. The lyrics are so deep, but thrown into a humor, that any fat...shortened comments
