All sense of perspective and critical objectivity are lost on me when it comes to RAY LAMONTAGNE. Having witnessed the sheer “not of this world” magic in his voice in the intimate surroundings of Manchester’s ‘Night & Day’ last November the man has cast a spell that refuses to shift.
Thus the release of the most uplifting track from his ‘Trouble’ debut just reminds me that all the fuss I’ve made over him for the past year has, if anything, been far too understated. ‘Forever My Friend’ is a timeless and captivating love song that marries acoustic rock with soul music so effortlessly and carries such an uplifting message about the reaffirmation of one’s love for a woman during the bad times that it’s hard not to think about the lyrics’ repercussions in the wider context of our troubled world.
RAY LAMONTAGNE is the genuine article and an exceptionally rare exponent of an even scarcer treasure: music for Heart and Soul.
