Review: 'INVENTION, THE'
'LIGHTS OUT EP'

-  Label: 'SELF RELEASED'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2005'

Our Rating:
Fledgling outfit THE INVENTION are based in the indie mecca of Leeds and have kindly sent us their 3-track demo.

THE INVENTION like big music with a heavy emphasis on driving rhythms. Their sound recalls The Music, The Killers, early U2 and even raves from the grave like The Cult. ‘Lock The Door’ opens with a surge of feedback then breaks out into a strident tub thumper with similarities to ‘Somebody Told Me’. ‘Lights Out’ ups the funkiness but lacks something. Last track ‘Too Far’ is the pick of the bunch – despite opening like an Ocean Colour Scene song: you know the one Chris Evans used for TFI Friday – managing to be heavy in the riff department but also decidedly funky.

The lead singer reminds me of Noel Gallagher and the music is derivative at the moment but there is a natural energy and swagger to THE INVENTION that should be the strong starting point for developing their own killer hooks and beats.
