Review: 'JULIETTE & THE LICKS'
'GOT LOVE TO KILL'

-  Label: 'HASSLE'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'September 19th 2005'

Our Rating:
Although the notion of film stars making records as vanity projects is often risible (Keanu Reeves with Dogstar anyone?), JULIETTE LEWIS appears - through a combination of contacts, clout and, impressively, an adherence to a heavy-touring ethic - to have ridden out the critical storm, as her "You're Speaking My Language" album was reviewed favourably on the whole.

From the mothership, "Got Love To Kill" is a pretty obvious choice for some 45RPM action, too. It's solid, neo-seductive, groove-bound, heavy-ish rock (not RAWK necessarily) with a distinctly Cult-ish feel and plenty of Siouxsie-referencing "oh-oh"s from the lady with the vigourously applied lippy.

And it's alright, to be honest. OK, it's hard to spot it in the crowd of monitor-mounting stadium rock wannabes from the last 20 years, but it does have energy and sass on its' side and is performed competently by the well-drilled Licks with spirit to spare.

Inevitably, they also offer it up for sacrifice on the remix altar, but the MSTRKRFT mix isn't too cringeworthy for all that. It turns up the fuzzy bass, streamlines the sound and brings out the New Order wannabes in them, while hanging on to the vocal and most of the structure. It's workmanlike rather than inspired, but not a total waste of space either.

"Got Love To Kill", then, does its' bit, makes plenty of aggressive noise, slaps you around a bit and leaves. It's hardly the sound of a celebrity slumming it and sinking without a trace, but I couldn't realistically say it's the sound of Juliette Lewis securing longevity either. Oh well.
