Review: 'Seibert, Aaron'
'There's Something'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '2005'

Our Rating:
Go ahead and say it: Yes, "Jill & Jack" does sound like the Dave Matthews with its funky, folksy vibe. Whether or not singer/songwriter Aaron Seibert (http://www.aseibert.net) was trying to consciously ape Matthews is another matter.

While "Jill & Jack" is certainly the best tune here, it is merely an upbeat change of pace from Seibert's usual slow acoustic jams, and the Matthews similarity could be coincidental. Nevertheless, Seibert will most likely receive attention from Matthews fans over it.

Seibert writes easygoing songs that are tuneful and relaxing to the ear. This is summer music, gentle acoustic pop that moves to its own laidback rhythm. The sensitive folk rock of "First Glance" captures Seibert at his best, a rainy-day track that plumbs the depths of his voice. Siebert, for the most part, doesn't sing like Matthews or any of his contemporaries. One can imagine Seibert strumming his guitar and crooning to the subway crowd, and "There's Something" has that "live in the living room" intimacy that major label recordings can never recreate.

"Desolation Street" finds Seibert at his most gritty, but most of this stuff is as comfortable as an old shoe or a handshake from a close friend.
