Although it featured prominently on their recent chart-topping "Singles" compilation, "Do Your Thing" hadn't actually been released as a, er, single until now. Dashed cunning, these marketing bods, eh?
Anyway, regardless of whether you have the "Singles" album or not, you'll no doubt already be aware of this slice of inhibition-chucking pop from BASEMENT JAXX'S triumphant Mardi Gras of a Glasto performance, and hearing it cannoning out of the speakers in your living room will probably bring it all back to you again - well, save for the trenchfoot and downpours, one fervently hopes.
Because - graced by Elliott May and Sharlene Hector's scattily wonderful vocals and Quentin Collins' sunburst of a trumpet - "Do Your Thing" is quite possibly the most infectious thing shy of foot and mouth you'll catch all year. Based around an extensive sample from Kenny Baron's "Fungie Mama", it's jazzy, louche and a dancefloor come hither that's impossible to resist. It's also got the sort of ridiculous lyrical input that has the finest literary pop gems like, er, "Boom Bang A Bang" and "Walla Walla Bing Bang" up against the wall. So put that in yer pipe and smoke it Bright Eyes.

It isn't strictly necessary, but there's also a comprehensive reworking of the track from SEIJI (BUGZ IN THE ATTIC), which ups te beats and blips, though it sensibly retains most of the vocal input. It's skeletal by comparison and only partially successful, but makes a nice companion piece regardless and does nothing to detract from a song that's a veritable hit if ever your reviewer's heard one.
