Review: 'GLITTERATI, THE/ EASYKILL'
'Newcastle, The Cluny, 18th October 2005'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
We arrive late to The Cluny (a cardinal sin in its own right, as the more time spent in such a lovely venue, the better) and only manage to catch the last three songs of supports EASYKILL.

It was probably a good thing though as they didn't really seem to be anybody's cup of tea. The audience looked slightly scared and bemused- most likely because they were thinking what they had done to deserve being shouted at by a bunch of twenty-somethings wearing more metal than is used in the construction of your everyday tank.

Still, the last song- with fast paced guitar riffs and lots of squealing feedback was met with cheers and wolf whistles of appreciation (or relief, I couldn't work it out), and once off stage, the lead singer did look a lot less scary than before.

The audience were an odd mix, with uber-trendy teenage rockers with their asymmetrically cut hair, skinny jeans and stripy tops mingling with old men (and women) in full cowboy regalia, from the hats and the boots right down to the leather tasselled jackets.

But the scary thing was that everyone was wearing black from head to toe, and so when THE GLITTERATI finally burst on stage it was a shock to the senses to actually see a bit of colour - albeit not a lot of it - but a white t-shirt and a makeshift arm band made out of bright red electrical tape was enough to send the crowd cheering madly and the band to go careering madly into their opening track 'What's The Matter With You?'

I'd read some not so complementary reviews about the band so I was a bit apprehensive about what the night was going to be like. The Glitterati, though, totally exceeded all my expectations, defied all initial prejudice and actually forced me to have a fantastic night.

The group were full of energy, bouncing around stage like over enthusiastic puppies, inviting the audience to "shake everything you've got" clap, dance and sing along with last single 'You've Got Nothing On Me' and playing songs with infectious drumbeats, catchy guitar tunes, twanging bass riffs and oh so over-the-top(but oh-so-good!) singing from lead vocalist Paul Gautrey (who was wearing the tightest pair of trousers ever seen. I kid you not!)

I would challenge anyone to go see this band and come out not liking them. Not only were they super friendly, laughing and bantering with the audience -keen to make sure that every single member of the crowd was having a good time, but they played frantic, up-tempo toe-tapping songs that will make you wear black and start to ROCK like you never have before. It was a great night, and I'm so pleased that they proved every bad review against them wrong!
