Review: 'BE YOUR OWN PET'
'London, Kentish Town Forum, 20th October 2005'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
You wont find them in Heat magazine and you wont find them on X Factor even if they blatantly are 'It'. If you do find them they go under the collective of BE YOUR OWN PET but it's more likely you'll hear them first.

Falling somewhere in between riotous noise and the climactic unruliness of At the Drive In, they demonstrate an unnerving ability to hammer their way through some heavy duty punk funk.   Whether it's the haphazard dancing, fireball drumming, slabs of bass or indiscriminate guitar, there's a sound and presence any band would kill for, and did I mention they legally can't drink?

With the 'I don't give a fuck' attitude pegged, they launch themselves into a set so blisteringly inharmonious you're reminded what real noise sounds like. Immediate and energetic it's somewhere in between the kickstart drumbeat and the first chords, that front woman Jemina transforms into a spectre. After looking all sugar and spice, her barked vocals hack through the discord with all the friction of the San Andreas fault.

Like Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Miss Pearl is the vital shot of feisty femininity that give Be Your Own Pet a discernible edge. Still they're hard work. You get your reward for staying with and in fits and bursts they wholly live up to their billing. 'Damn Damn Leash' sees the melody fight its way through the conflict and 'Spill' is again a healthy wedge of raucous noise mongering that sees a serious grounding in most things punk and small things pop.

It might be that I'd like to see Jemina suck on a lollipop or it might be the potential Be Your Own Pet are yet to fulfil, whatever it is it's good to see the Kids are doing alright.
