Our Rating:
"RSL are back!" proclaims the press release.

"Hurrah!" exclaims this reviewer, not knowing who they are or from where they have returned but at the same time not wishing to appear ungrateful. If RSL are willing to come all this way the least I can do is offer a warm reception.

As it turns out greeting RSL is a doddle given the Latin carnival atmosphere of this taster track from their forthcoming album 'Every Preston Guild'. Like a certain manufacturer's wood preservative 'The Magic of Spain' does exactly what it says on the tin and whisks us off to the sweltering heat of Catalan where olive-skinned women with long jet black hair and matching eye-liner dance bare-foot in gypsy dresses on sun-baked earth shaking their maracas and on every horizon there is the silhouette of a large coach carrying tanked up English holiday-makers to and from the airport. Aahh, the English abroad.

Sounding so Med is pretty good going considering this lot come from the slightly less tempting climes of Manchester. Best known for providing music for Euro 2004 with their hit 'Wesley Music' this track flows and swings effortlessly, sounding like some lost gem by Lalo Schiffrin remixed by Calexico, replete with jazz overtones and a fantastic 'live' sound.

The extended work-out (adding 3 minutes) is the one to go for here but their version of 'The Godfather Waltz' may also have you stuffing cotton wool in your mouth and exclaiming "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
