Review: 'LONGCUT, THE'
'London, Shoreditch, Cargo, 11th November 2005'

-  Genre: 'Post-Rock'

Our Rating:
There aren't many bands doing what THE LONGCUT do right now. Making words seem redundant, in the same way as Mogwai, and Explosions in the Sky, The Longcut sculpt some pretty immense instrumental prog resonance. With Cargo being the nuclear bunker that it is means the only other alternative to being sonically besieged is to leave, and as tonight is a sell out, that's pretty unlikely.

Splicing the best bits of New Order, Sonic Youth and Mogwai into an intermingling post rock melange, The Longcut dart between the darkly danceable to the dreamily overwhelming. With a healthy amount of instrumental descents the Stone Roses would happily call their own, singer/drummer Stuart Ogilvies rant 'n' bark vocals add to the inevitable swell of anticipation that await the breakdown, yet amongst leering bass and thumping drum samples they're gratifyingly irrelevant.

'Last Act of a Desperate Man' and 'Late Night Bus' succeed in heightening a readily enthusiast atmosphere but it's the dirty, dirty bass and electric handclap of 'A Quiet life' and the natural release of endorphins as 'Transition' pulsates into life that confirms The Longcut have very few peers as a live act.

Then the anger swarms over you like ants on an apple core. Where's the number one single? The tired slot on Top of the Pops? The begrudging interview on CD:UK?   The recognition dammit!? Potential isn't potential anymore when you continually exceed it and here we have a true alternative to the anything currently dominating our playlists. Granted, there are the obvious Manchester influences, but if this is the rehashing of the heady days of the Hacienda it's a welcome return. A real masterclass.
