Review: 'MACCABEES, THE'
'London, King's Cross Water Rats, 30th Nov 2005'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
With a Lamacq endorsement ringing in their ears, Brighton five piece THE MACCABEES waste no time in setting their stall as a band to watch for in 2006.

Drawing upon influences from The Clash to Gang of Four, they're a gloriously contemporary mish mash of subtly dark new wave rock. Without wishing to pigeonhole or create further sub genres, it's vigorous, immediate, and instantly likeable.

They play songs of everyman observation and romantic yearning that will strike a chord with everyone. It's a bit like pic n mix with all your favourites. Current single 'X Ray' makes for a dramatically danceable number, all looming bass and barked vocals whilst the elasticised, angled guitar sound of 'Bicycles' unearths a penchant for the vocal variety that's been The Futureheads trademark.

Behind the upbeat energy of the music, there's intelligence to what they're saying. Whether it be the lyrical self inquest of 'X Ray' or the quirky analysis of the regular that's seen the Arctic Monkeys elevated to the public play list, The Maccabees accomplish it with endearing aplomb. With the Water Rats conquered, Brixton Academy beckons sooner rather than later.
