Hailing from London, THE DELIGHTS’ debut single presents us with a band that already possesses a highly polished and assured sound. What we have here is basically power-pop with a punky edge – a cascading, choppy sea of guitar-wash, regimented vocals and a driving backbeat. The lead tune ‘Society’ works well, with its early U2-ish feel and an anthemic chorus being the main hooks (by the way Mr. Edge, it doesn’t matter how many pedals you got, you’re still playing the same bloody licks ca. 1982 so just accept it, ok?).
While it’s a solid and quietly impressive effort even better is the back-up cut ‘My Little Girl’ which to these ears, has a little bit more bite and dark energy propelling it, which makes for a more intriguing listen. The punchy production on both tracks is well focused and suits the band perfectly. It's early days but if this crew can inject some added blood and glitter into their already appealing mix then The Delights could be a band for the future. More please.
