Review: 'DELANERS, THE'
'London, Soho, Spice of Life, 12th January 2006'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
THE DELANERS are a sexy, thumping, psychedelic-tinged angular set-up, with some interesting haircuts and loads of sweaty leather to boot. At this gig we were confronted with a nice n heavy load of rock that would definitely scare your grandmother. Either that, or have her enjoy a good old knees up.

Think Rod Stewart (haircut), think Billy Idol (vocals), think the White Stripes (in general), and then add loads of bouncy rhythms, gritty piercing guitars, swirling keyboards, and all-round great musicianship, and you're in close proximity to what the Delaners punched out to onlookers at the Spice of Life on this cold January evening.

Initially they could be mistaken for yet another sharp-edged London based art-rock band, but there is definitely more substance to the Delaners. They are a little more playful, and they had bags of personality, making them fun to watch. Not to mention the huge amounts of on-stage gurning 'a-la-Tap' going on, and why the bloody hell not?

There was a definite assumption that people were going to leave the room in a better mood simply from watching their performance. In fact, the effect The Delaners had on some members of the audience was startling. There was a random eruption of barking noises (hmmm), and then a bloke donned in a City Suit literally jumped to his feet and began to jerk around like a Christian convert in a Charismatic Mass. There was the danger of him upstaging the band at one point, but fortunately their song ended before he exploded.

The Delaners are worth checking out, they're good live and their songs are great. The one thing I'd keep an eye on would be if (not when) they become more well established, they don't go down the road that most bands on the current indie scene tend to these days (i.e. they end up sounding a bit like Duran Duran, or any other 80's-derived band). I don't think there is much chance of that happening though...
