Review: 'MORNING AFTER GIRLS, THE'
'HI-SKIES'

-  Label: 'BEST BEFORE RECORDS'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '13th March 2006'

Our Rating:
This is a confusing EP if ever there was one. The single itself, “Hi-Skies” is an ear-piercing punch in the stomach that could probably shatter glass from 100 meters, which then leads into the Dandy-Warhol-ish “Always Mine”, probably my favourite track.

Then, just as you’re trying to find your feet again, we’re given the deliciously soporific “Tomorrow’s Time”, a stoner’s lullaby filled with Ascroft-esque vocals, and the ambience of Spiritualized, with the drone of the Hammond set way back in the mix, and the vocals kind of flying over the sleepy melodies.

The overall effect creates a rather lovely aural landscape, which, in the words of Sascha Lucashenko (vox/guitar) is “…like a really slow heartbeat, almost you’re about to die, but you’re already dead,” (n.b. At this point he’d just got off a long-haul plane flight and I think he was being sarcastic). Anyway, the point is, it’s lovely.

THE MORNING AFTER GIRLS have embarked on tour after relentless tour, bringing their take on the Alan McGee’s ‘Creation’ sound (i.e. My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, etc) back into the currently rather tired-out music scene.

They’ve already played with the Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and collaborated with Mark Gardener (Ride) - all very appropriate for what they are doing at the moment.

Keep an eye out on what this band get up to in 2006, we except great things.
