Our Rating:
When I first heard this single, I thought it was Starsailor, then took a double take and decided that no, it must be Keane. Then I took a triple take and thought, “Hold on a second, it could be Snow Patrol”, but then that was silly, so I decided against it. But then I though that, although the vocals are definitely not those of Chris Martin, the track could’ve been lifted from any of Coldplay’s albums (on account of the paucity of difference between them).

I’m unsure why MORNING RUNNER’s record company are trying to resurrect a sound which died on it’s on it’s knees ages ago, before art-school angular rock came in. This single, “Burning Benches” could have been by any of the above bands, and I was bored shitless of them the first time round.

Sorry, as pretty as Burning Benches is, I can’t summon any enthusiasm because I’ve had that particular bout of MOR piano-bashing rammed into my earhole a while back, and I don’t want to go back to that place in a hurry.

However, the production is slick, and these bands seem to inspire large followings of devoted fans. They’ve already had two sell-out tours and have played with the likes of Coldplay (Quelle Surprise), so I wouldn’t be surprised if Morning Runners do well commercially. But personally, I think I’ll be leaving these guys to the Radio 2 listeners.
