Originally hailing from Australian capital Canberra, the tall, dark and handsome MARTIN CRAFT appears to have mistaken the urchin-stuffed environs of his adopted East End of Lahndan home for the breezy Californian coastline roughly circa 1966 if his quite lovely debut single “Silver & Fire” is anything to go by.
Because – crammed with pastoral acoustic guitars, tinkly glocks, lazy drums and Martin’s sense of wonder vocals – “Silver & Fire” really Is the essence of dreamy, plangent summer days, as normally soundtracked by The Beach Boys and Simon & Garfunkel rather than a gangly labelmate of angular indie weirdos like The Futureheads and The Mystery Jets.

Hold onto your prejudicial hats, though, at least as long as you get to check out B-side “You Are The Music”, where Craft’s vocals are still the epitome of dreamy and idyllic, but the music takes a notably more strident turn towards the niggly likes of Tom Vek or (stretching a point) prime time Talking Heads.
Thus, it seems Martin Craft is in the business of both wowing us and selling us a few stylistic dummies as well. That’s the way to do it.
